Blow as Walmsley's closes Wolverhampton branch
Furniture store Walmsley's has closed its Wolverhampton branch after the company went into administration.
Walmsley Furnishing has shut its store in the Mander Centre and all furniture has been removed.
The closure comes as staff at WH Smith's branch at the city's £22.5 million bus station said the store would close less than two years after opening.
Insolvency practitioners PCR said that Walmsley's closed on Friday with the loss of one job.
The Walsall branch in Bradford Street will continue trading while administrators work to keep as many of the chain's 24 stores open.
The company is still continuing to fulfil customer orders.
Meanwhile workers said WH Smith will close its store inside the renovated landmark Queen's Building at the bus station on March 1. Around eight people work there.
The shop is facing a lot of competition for sales of newspapers, magazines and confectionary from Spar and Co-op stores nearby.
The company also has a smaller branch inside Wolverhampton rail station as well as its bigger, two-floor shop in the Mander Centre.
News of the closure is a blow for the bus station which had seen all the adjacent buildings and offices taken on.
