Budget freezes parking charges in Cannock
Car park charges will be frozen, a new apprenticeship scheme launched and town centres spruced up after budget proposals were agreed in Cannock.
The 2013-14 budget – apart from the council tax –was voted in after a debate of more than two-and-a-half hours at a meeting last night.
But council tax bills are still poised to rise by two per cent later this month, despite objections from opposition Conservative and Liberal Democrat councillors.
The opposition groups each put forward alternative proposals last night which would have seen the council tax increase scrapped for at least 12 months.
However, the controlling Labour group refused to take on board the alternative budget suggestions.
The two per cent increase will need to go before the full council on February 27 for final approval.
Council leader George Adamson said it amounts to 6p per household a week costing Band D families £200.95.
It comes as the level of grant offered by the Government has been reduced this year.
