A passer-by spotted flames in the cafe at the Spon Lane building and alerted the fire brigade at 3.35pm on Saturday.
Fire crews from West Bromwich arrived to find the fire contained to the hot plate unit within the coffee shop on the ground floor of the building.
Watch Commander Jason Jew said: "We isolated the electrical supply, before extinguishing the small fire with water"
Smoke had filled the atrium of the building and it took several hours to clear using ventilation fans. The only damage was to the unit.
The college will open as usual on Monday.
