Staffordshire comedian David St John crowned his 28th gameshow appearance by finishing runner-up – but got the chance to trade impressions with TV star Rory Bremner along the way.

David, of Cannock, has been appearing on quiz shows for the past 30 years and yesterday took part in his 28th show, Face The Clock on Channel Four.

The show sees contestants answer questions against the clock. They can't see how long they have left but play stops when the clock runs out.

David finished in second place, missing out to his rival by just one second.

"I would have won the money too if I'd have been in the final because I knew the answer to the questions," he said. The 64-year-old travelled to a studio outside Glasgow to film the show, which was broadcast yesterday.

"It was great fun and there was just one second in it," said David, who performs comedy acts and songs on the club scene.

"Most shows are based on the same sort of format but, without seeing the clock, this show has a bit of a hidden factor.

"The studio was amazing, it looked like some kind of spaceship although it was very cold and in between filming the crew brought us hot drinks and hot water bottles."

The show is hosted by Rory Bremner, who spent time chatting to the contestants before and during the show.

"He was a very down to Earth guy," said David. "We traded a few impressions. I did some Prince Charles for him and a bit of Nelson Mandella, which he seemed to like."

The comedian is now looking for his next challenge and aims to go on 30 shows. Over the years, he has appeared on everything from Sale of the Century and Eggheads to The Chase and The Weakest Link.
