Revamp of Astle House is planned
Ambitious new plans will further transform the face of West Bromwich town centre and see the historic Astle House revamped into shops, restaurants and apartments.
Developer Raj Lal from Birmingham-based R Cubed wants to transform the iconic red Grade II listed building, formerly printing and publishing group Kenrick & Jefferson's base on the town's High Street under the new scheme.
A planning application for the project has now been submitted to Sandwell Council. The news comes just a week after the Homes and Communities agency announced plans to redevelop the nearby Sandwell College building under another major scheme.
Under the plans it is proposed to turn the site into shops, restaurants and cafes on the ground floor and 14 residential apartments on the first and second floors.
The landmark dates back to 1883. Mr Lal paid £240,000 for the building last year.
Planning documents submitted with the application state: "The careful and sensitive restoration and repair and commercial/residential development of Astle House will protect the building for the future."
