Tony donates kidney to stranger
A father from Staffordshire has donated a kidney to a stranger he may never meet.
Tony Burgess is recovering after donating the organ. The 41-year-old father-of-one, of Derrington, near Stafford, decided to give his kidney to a stranger – known as altruistic donation – back in 2011 after hearing about the growing practice on a radio show.
After months of tests, Mr Burgess was found to be fit enough to donate and underwent a four-hour operation in Coventry just before Christmas.
Mr Burgess today said he had never had any doubts about what he was doing and hoped his story might inspire others.
"I've been inspired by other peoples' acts of kindness across the world and across history and if this activity is in any way helping helping to prompt anyone else to just put more kindness or compassion into their daily or weekly lives, it will be immensely fulfilling," he said.
