Shoppers are snubbing Cannock town centre this Christmas, with footfall down 20 per cent on last year.

Weekly figures show numbers heading to Cannock Shopping Centre fell from 127,500 last December to 101,500 this month.

Stafford posted a modest 0.5 per cent fall for the same week but bosses there are certain the festive period will be better than 2011.

Traders in Rugeley are also pleased, reporting increased sales on last year.

Cannock Shopping Centre manager Natal Chapman today said she was at a loss to explain the figures for the week starting December 10.

"Footfall is down, there's no doubt about that," she said. "I'm not sure why. Perhaps shoppers are still a little bit wary with the state of the economy."
