Scores of vehicles were stopped during the sting operation at the A5 in Longford and Bridgtown and the A460 Slitting Mill in Rugeley. The car and lorry were taken by police.

Three drivers had to pay £30 for not wearing their seatbelts while another two received three penalty points and an £80 fine for using mobile phones.

Two scrap collectors who did not have licences were stopped, with one ordered to produce a waste transfer notice within 24 hours.

Eight drivers were ordered to repair defects to their cars and three others were breathalised. Police, council environmental health officers and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency were involved in the crackdown on December 6.

The following day police followed refuse collection trucks on their rounds after receiving reports of motorists mounting pavements to get round them.

Sergeant David Edge said: "It is important that drivers ensure their vehicles are in a safe condition.

"The use of mobile phones while driving endangers other road users so drivers can expect to be dealt with robustly for this offence."
