Stafford engine factory Perkins to axe 40 jobs as orders slow down
Forty permanent members of staff will lose their jobs at an engine factory in Stafford, it can be revealed today, with the frail global economy blamed.
The latest round of redundancies at Perkins Engines Company, which last month laid off 131 agency staff, will take place in the next month.
Bosses at the Tixall Road-based firm said the regrettable move was triggered by ongoing uncertainty.
Hourly, salaried and management employees will be sought to take up the 40 voluntary redundancies, but compulsory redundancies have not been ruled out if not enough staff come forward.
Eight permanent Stafford employees have already left the company through a UK-wide voluntary redundancy scheme.
Adrian Talbot, marketing community services manager at Perkins' headquarters in Peterborough, said the firm was hoping to avoid having to make compulsory redundancies.
He added: "Uncertainty around the global economy has impacted on our customers and as a consequence volumes aren't anywhere near what we expected.
"It's a regrettable move but we have got to make sure our business is successful for the future."
A 30-day consultation with staff is ongoing in case the compulsory scheme is introduced.
