Canopy goes in West Bromwich town centre revamp
Sparks fly as workmen start to demolish a landmark canopy in West Bromwich town centre which is being pulled down as part of a multi-million pound revamp.
The canopy at the Farley Centre in High Street is being removed as part of a scheme to boost the appearance of the centre.
The removal of the canopy will open up the end of the pedestrian High Street and recreate the views along the town's '"Golden Mile" as it was formerly known.
Work is taking place at night to avoid disruption to visitors and businesses in the town centre.
The glazing on the canopy was removed on Sunday night and work to remove the structure started last night and will continue tonight.
The section of the canopy alongside the British Heart Foundation will remain in place.
This is the next stage in the revitalisation of the High Street as part of the £8.2m Public Realm project.
New paving, lighting, seating and greenery will be installed in Duchess Parade from January. Similar work will be carried out in Princess Parade next summer.
Sandwell's economy boss Councillor Derek Rowley, said: "This is the latest part of work to transform West Bromwich town centre.
"The canopy is in poor condition and by taking it out we will really open up that end of the High Street and give it a brighter feel.
"We've also made sure the work won't disrupt shoppers and businesses as we approach Christmas," added Councillor Rowley.
