New £65m Sainsbury's taking shape at last
It is one of the biggest building sites in the West Midlands, but soon this sprawling piece of land on the edge of Wolverhampton city centre will soon be home to a brand new £65 million Sainsbury's supermarket.
Work is well under way at this piece of land off Raglan Street, where the long-awaited development is being built.
Some concrete foundations have already been laid and the scale of the store is now becoming clear.
The 90,000 sq ft store, which is next to the former Eagle Works mattress factory, is creating 190 new jobs.
Battle
The supermarket is being built on the site of the former Lord Raglan pub, which was demolished in 2006.
The view of the site from Graiseley Court flats shows Chapel Ash in the background, including the spire of St Mark's Church which dates back to the 1840s. To the right of the picture is Wolverhampton City PCT headquarters Coniston House and the former Eagle Works is to the left, now home to art studios and galleries.
Sainsbury's was finally given the green light to build a new superstore following a 10-year battle for the land with Tesco.
