Footballer airlifted to hospital at game
A footballer suffered a head injury and had to be airlifted to hospital while another collapsed pitchside during two separate matches over the weekend.
The first was injured during a mid-air collision and the other in a tackle. West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to Calf Heath Village Hall in Calf Heath at 11am yesterday.
The Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford with a trauma doctor on-board attended the scene.
Spokeswoman Claire Thomas said: "A man, believed to be in his 20s, had suffered a head injury and convulsions following a mid-air collision with another player. The man was given treatment on the pitch by crews and the doctor and his condition stabilised before being airlifted to New Cross Hospital."
In a separate incident on Saturday, Rushall Olympic footballer Ahmed Obeng was rushed to hospital after collapsing on the pitch during a home game against Chorley.
Medics were called to the Dales Lane ground after the 21-year-old, who plays centre forward, was injured in a challenge about an hour into the match.
Mr Obeng, had initially got to his feet after the tackle before collapsing at the side of the pitch.
It was thought he may have suffered a broken rib and punctured lung and he was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital for further assessment, but was discharged the same day.
Rushall Olympic manager Neil Kitching said the player had suffered severe bruising to his chest and rib area and was likely to be out of action for the next seven to 10 days while he recovers.
Mr Kitching said: "He was unconscious for a while. It was worrying. He is fine, but he has severe bruising and will need to recover."
