The city centre Uberra club will reopen under its original name, The Canal Club.

Bosses have vowed to create a high-class nightspot complete with strict dress code and champagne bar for VIP guests.

Uberra opened its doors in December last year following a £250,000 refurbishment, but shut after 23-year-old Tom Kirwan was fatally stabbed outside.

The owners of the building, Dale Investments, have taken back the lease to run the club, which will open its doors at the end of October.

A company spokesman said: "We want to bring a bit of luxury to the night scene in Wolverhampton. The old name Uberra is gone and we are going back to the original name of Canal Club."

Bosses say moves to relaunch the club will secure around 30 jobs, with hopes of the creation of another 50 in future. As part of the revamp a new champagne bar is being created on top of the two bars already inside.

Revellers will also be given the chance to apply for one of 100 VIP cards for access to the champagne bar.

The former British Waterways depot on the corner of Ring Road St David's and Wednesfield Road, was formerly Miss Moneypenny's. It closed in 2009 before reopening as Uberra.

Mr Kirwan's funeral will take place at the St Peter and St Paul Church, in North Street, Wolverhampton, at 1pm tomorrow, and a 15 minute's silence will take place at Molineux in honour of his love of Wolves.
