About 30 people, including staff and patients, rushed from the Albion House Surgery in Albion Street at about 11.50am today.
Smoke had started pouring from the fitting on the ceiling in an office behind reception. A piece of burning material fell onto a desk, which was damaged by the flames.
Stuart Steele, a member of the AW surgeries patients panel, said the centre would be closed for the rest of today and tomorrow for the clean-up.
