Pudding club name change leaves sour taste

A new pudding tasting club found itself in more than a trifling amount of bother after using a name that was already a registered trademark.

Barry Hall, owner of Azzari Too restaurant, on Three Shires Oak Road, Bearwood, was told he had to alter the name of his new monthly meeting club for customers to taste-test desserts.

A business also named The Pudding Club, based at the Three Ways House Hotel in the Cotswolds, asked for the change. Its chairman said the name had been a registered trademark for 17 years.

Mr Hall has now changed the meeting's mouth-watering moniker to Pudding Night. He said he had no fears his customers would dessert the club after the name change last week.

Peter Henderson, chairman of The Pudding Club for 17 years and owner of Three Ways House Hotel, said: "The club has been running for 27 years and the trademark has been in existence for 17 years. The club defends its trademark just like a global name like Mars would. The only reason we were concerned is that it causes confusion for people searching on the web."

Mr Hall said: "Out the blue we got this letter saying we cannot use the name Pudding Club in any format and to remove the name from all social media and website."

Richard Marshall, chairman of Bearwood Traders Association, said he was surprised the Cotswolds business could fear loss of trade.
