Thousands of extra letters will be sorted in Wolverhampton, it was revealed today, as Royal Mail announced it is closing its sorting office in Shrewsbury.

Royal Mail today announced formal proposals to close its sorting office in Castle Foregate, Shrewsbury, putting 160 jobs under threat.

Mail for Shropshire and Mid Wales will instead be sorted in Wolverhampton, Chester and Cardiff.

Under the plans, mail for SY postcodes across Shrewsbury and Mid Wales will be dealt with at Chester mail centre while mail for TF postcodes in the Telford area will be sent to Wolverhampton.
