Arson attacks in Cannock have plummeted by almost 80 per cent, new figures showed today.
From April this year until now, there have been just 35 arson attacks – compared to 153 in the same period last year.
This represents a drop of 77 per cent.
The introduction of a mobile football pitch has been given as one of the reasons for the reduction, with firefighters saying it keeps youngsters busy and out of trouble.
The woeful wet weather was also cited.
Ian Dawson, station manager, said: "We are pleased to report a reduction in deliberate fires in Cannock since April this year.
Evidence suggests that the use of StreetStadia over the Easter holidays resulted in significant reductions of anti-social behaviour."
The football pitch is for youngsters aged between eight and 17. Mr Dawson added: "StreetStadia isn't just about keeping kids out of mischief, it's also to encourage healthy living and to help young people make new friends.
