One driver died when his car left the road and struck a tree and another five were injured in a series of accidents on roads across the West Midlands.

A 23-year-old man was killed when his Renault Clio hit a tree near Hednesford.

Three people were also injured, one of them seriously, after a crash between two cars in Wolverhampton.

In other accidents, one driver was injured on the M6 and another was hurt when his car turned over in Newport Road, Eccleshall.

The dead man, from Cannock, suffered a heart attack after the crash in Brindley Road at 5pm last night.

Claire Thomas, of West Midlands Ambulance Service, said an off-duty medic was first on the scene, adding: "Crews and a doctor worked to administer CPR to the man. Sadly, nothing could be done to save him."

Police arrested a 21-year-old man after the collision between a BMW One Series and an Audi Quattro in Compton Street, Wolverhampton, at 11.30pm

All those involved were men in their early 20s. The most seriously injured was one of three in the Audi who was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

M6 drivers faced delays when a car struck the central reservation near Hilton Park Services at 6.30pm.

And a man escaped with minor injuries in the accident in Eccleshall at 5.30pm.
