Stafford's Alstom Grid has been awarded two contracts worth £13 million.

The booming company has struck a deal with EDF Energy to supply generator transformers.

Kevin Marriott, regional commercial vice president, said: "This is a great local engineering success for Alstom's highly-skilled local workforce in Staffordshire and further strengthens Alstom's position as a global leader in power generation and electrical grid.

"We are delighted to be able to supply this new generation of transformers and to build upon this important relationship with EDF Energy."

Under the new contracts, the firm will provide Sizewell B nuclear power station in Suffolk and Torness nuclear power station in Scotland with the new transformers.

Alstom, which recently celebrated 50 years of production of power transmission technology in Stafford, employs 1,400 people in the town between its sites at Lichfield Road and St Leonard's Avenue.

In April, it announced it was recruiting 150 extra staff to meet demand for its products.

The parent French group employs 92,000 people in around 100 countries around the world.
