Letters are being collected up to an hour earlier from post boxes across Wolverhampton.

Changes have been made in six postcode areas of the city, where the last collection of the day has moved forward by between 15 minutes to an hour.

Royal Mail said the city had been chosen to pilot the earlier collections because the areas were close to the main sorting office at Sun Street where people can post letters until later in the evening.

Royal Mail spokesman Val Bodden said: "We have brought forward the collection times of some post boxes in Penn and surrounding postcode areas.

"These changes were made to improve efficiency and quality of service for our customers to ensure all mail enters our system in time to achieve next-day delivery.

"Customers have been given advance notice of these changes which are necessary to ensure that mail arrives at Wolverhampton Mail Centre in time to be dispatched for onward delivery across the UK and beyond.

"Later collections are still made from many postboxes, including North West Midlands Mail Centre and Delivery Office, Sun Street."

Stickers have been placed on post boxes informing people of the changes, which have been introduced in the WV4, WV5, WV6, WV8, WV9 and WV10 postcode areas. Around one in five post boxes are affected.

It comes after Royal Mail changed delivery times to homes across Wolverhampton last September, meaning some people do not get their post until later in the afternoon. Royal Mail has imposed a deadline on itself of delivering all post by 3pm.
