A burst water tank in a block of flats caused severe flooding as water cascaded into apartments below.
Firefighters were called to a second-floor flat in Hollins Drive, Stafford, at 10.30 last night. The water damaged carpets, furniture and light fittings.
Crews broke into the flat as the occupant was out. They found the source of the leak and isolated the electrics.
Crew commander Darren Turner said the carpets were sodden and water had also leaked into the two flats below, affecting the light fittings and carpets.
Staff from Sanctuary Housing, which owns the block, were surveying the damage.
