Visitor numbers to the Staffordshire County Show were down by around 12,000 this year – but bosses today said they were pleased with the turnout amid the wet weather.

More than 60,000 people attended, despite constant downpours, but the figure was down from 72,000 last year.

Event organisers had hoped to attract 70,000-plus visitors but the heavy rain meant some stayed at home.

The rain did not dampen spirits among those who did turn out for Staffordshire's biggest agricultural event in Stafford as they viewed record numbers of cattle, sheep, pigs and horses.

More than 20 different shows, 400 trade stands, and football's showpiece trophy – the FA Cup – were all on offer for visitors.

Richard Williams, chief executive of organising group the Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society, said he was impressed with the visitor numbers considering the adverse weather conditions.
