A schoolgirl was taken to hospital after being hit by a van in Staffordshire.

The youngster, believed to be aged 12, was injured on Pye Green Road, Cannock, at around 4.40pm yesterday.

The route was blocked near the junction of Stafford Road for around an hour as police, ambulance and the air ambulance were called to the scene.

The girl suffered head, arm and leg injuries and was taken to New Cross Hospital. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Mario Eleftheriou (corr), who runs Ped Piper Fish Bar on Pye Green Road, said it had been a shock to see all the emergency services at the scene.

"It was quite dramatic. The air ambulance was here and the road was blocked. We heard a girl had been run over by a van. You could see all the blue lights flashing."
