A fire crew from Stafford was called to the River Sow off Fairway, Littleworth, yesterday morning.

An animal rescue unit from Cannock and water rescue team from Tamworth were also sent to help.

Animal straps were used by firefighters to pull the animal to safety.

Crew manager Paul Radcliffe, from Stafford fire station, said the calf was unharmed. He added: "It had strolled to the river. It had been trying to get out and got stuck in the mud."

Crews were at the scene for around an hour after being called at 10.24am.
