A pub in Cannock has reopened its doors to customers following a £60,000 transformation.

The Crystal Fountain in St John's Road was sold six weeks ago after being closed for a year.

The Grade II listed venue, which dates from 1937, was shut last May in the wake of claims it was used as a swingers' pub.

Now it has been bought at auction by Fireside, a company run by Clive Clinton and Angus McMeeking, who are also behind The Courthouse in Dudley, The Black Country Arms in Walsall and a new enterprise in Queen Street, Wolverhampton.

The refurbishment plans for the pub, which was re-launched last night, had to be approved by English Heritage which values it as a good example of a 1930s roadside pub.

Mr Clinton said he was keen to shake off its former reputation. "This is a now a community pub selling real ales and promoting games events such as darts," he said.
