A special group has been set up to help protect businesses in Willenhall after a spate of raids and attacks that have caused thousands of pounds of damage.

Abbey Spun Cast, in Stringes Lane, is just one business to have suffered at the hands of yobs, with vandals and thieves striking up to six times a month.

Boss Stuart Aston said the constant attacks had been "soul destroying". But now businesses are fighting back and a new group has been set up and has helped install £100,000 of security measures to vulnerable buildings.

The new group helps businesses link -up and warn each other about suspicious sightings and help improve surveillance and security patrols.

Bosses said they are already starting to see the benefits of the manufacturing sub group set up by the Willenhall Traders and Community Support Group.

Mr Aston, who is company secretary and general manager of 30-year-old Abbey Spun Cast, said the company has suffered numerous attacks, with damage caused ranging from a few hundred pounds to £20,000.

"Crime against business premises has forced some employers to leave the area and we are determined to not only stop this but also to attract companies into Willenhall to encourage investment in the community," he said.

"In the current economic climate, with some companies barely able to survive, break-ins, theft and vandalism can be soul destroying.

"But this group is connecting people, through pride and helping Willenhall move forward." He added: "Working side by side has instilled a great sense of pride and motivation among businesses here."
