A West Bromwich postman who was mauled by a dog whilst on his round, is calling for owners to take more responsibility.

Dennis Glenn, aged 24, was attacked by the rottweiler on Tuesday, whilst he was delivering post to homes in the Hill Top area of the town. The father-of-one, is now supporting the ongoing Royal Mailinquiry into dog attacks on postal workers.

This attack came after Donald Brydon, Chairman of Royal Mail Group, announced the launch of an independent Inquiry into the prevalence and consequences of dog attacks on postal workers in the UK.

There are between three and a half thousand and four thousand dog attacks on Royal Mail employees each year, resulting in injuries, many severe Royal Mail has revealed.

Mr Glenn, of St Vincent Crescent, who has been a postman for three years said: "I was delivering my post as usual and I was walking up the drive of one house when I was I distracted by a dog which was in a van. "

The next thing Mr Glenn knew, another dog came bounding through the gates of the house growling at him.

He said: "It was a large rottweiler, and it just leapt at me and bit me in the left arm. As it happened I shouted at the owner to come out and help and I just ran away as fast as I could. I didn't know what was going to happen."

He added: "It was terrifying, and it was a large dog, anyone smaller than me will have been knocked over. If it was a child it would have been even worse."

The dog had ripped his jacket and left his arm bleeding.

He said: "Someone had to take over my round whilst I went to hospital for a tetanus injection.

I don't blame the pets I blame the owners."

The incident was reported to the police, and Royal Mail is now refusing to deliver to that address.
