Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward has left the band following a contract row and will no longer perform at a long-awaited reunion gig or tour.
The 63-year-old rock legend had been due to join the other members of the Midland band to record a new album and go out on tour, including a headlining slot at this year's Download Festival.
But the band has now confirmed he will not be taking part.
A statement on the group's Facebook page, signed Tony, Ozzy and Geezer, said: "We were saddened to hear yesterday via Facebook that Bill declined publicly to participate in our current Black Sabbath plans.
"We have no choice but to continue recording without him although our door is always open. We are still in the UK with Tony. Writing and recording the new album and on a roll...See you at Download!!!"
Ward has been in a row over what he called an "unsignable contract".
A statement on his website said: "At this time, I would love nothing more than to be able to proceed with the Black Sabbath album and tour.
"However, I am unable to continue unless a 'signable' contract is drawn up; a contract that reflects some dignity and respect toward me as an original member of the band.
"Last year, I worked diligently in good faith with Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler. Several days ago, after nearly a year of trying to negotiate, another 'unsignable' contract was handed to me.
"Let me say that although this has put me in some kind of holding pattern, I am packed and ready to leave the US for England.
"More importantly, I definitely want to play on the album, and I definitely want to tour with Black Sabbath."
Fans have been commenting about the situation. One wrote: "I hope that money wont be the issue. Its so sad if money has this impact on people."
Another said: "The lads are in their sixties now and have nothing to prove anymore. No matter how good a potential replacement will be, I just won't see Sabbath...without Bill."
