The winner of an amazing Christmas draw to bag £6,000 worth of prizes can today be revealed – as it emerged 5,000 people had visited Wolverhampton city centre to enter.

Wolverhampton's Win Christmas competition sees 26-year-old Matthew Lockley walk away with a haul of prizes including £1,000 to spend in the city centre, Wolves tickets and a HD Sony TV.

He was named as winner by Wolves legend Steve Bull at the Arena Theatre this week. His goodies will be delivered to his home in Parkfields.

Chairman of Wolverhampton Partnership Jon Crockett said: "We wanted to do something to make a difference to those people who come into the city centre and to the retail outlets, and make it vibrant like it should be."

Head of the partnership, Heather Ernstons, added that there had been no internet entries, meaning everyone who entered had headed into the city centre. Beatties store manager Debbie Eggerton dreamed up the idea in the summer after the riots. "We needed something to lift the city and starting thinking about doing a campaign, she said. "Since then, it has just snowballed."
