Patients in Stafford are the only ones being forced to sleep on mixed-sex wards in the region after its crisis-hit hospital failed to hit targets, it has emerged.

No patients in the Black Country have been forced to sleep in mixed-sex areas but Stafford Hospital breached regulations 78 times during October, figures have revealed. It is a major success for the Government which has threatened to fine trusts which break the rules. Under plans by the Department of Health the hospital could be fined £18,500.

The troubled hospital has repeatedly failed to hit the targets despite carrying out work in its A&E department.

In September there were 10 breaches at the hospital but the sudden increase to 78 has been blamed on a change to the rules.
