Formula One legend Nigel Mansell was congratulated by icons from the world of sport and comedy in Sir Alex Ferguson and Jasper Carrott as he became the latest celebrity name unveiled on Birmingham's Walk of Stars.

The most successful British driver of all time, with 31 victories, was introduced to Sir Alex by friend Gary Newbon as Manchester United were staying in the Hyatt Hotel on Broad Street before their West Bromwich Albion game yesterday.

As he accepted a plaque in Broad Street yesterday, Mansell asked the crowd of thousands to applaud police's response to the riots of last week and said officers need more powers to tackle rioting thugs.

The former world champion, who has been involved with police forces and specials for 28 years, said: "We have a fantastic body of police in this country and they all deserve a round of applause for doing such a brilliant job in exceptional circumstances."

The ceremony for father-of-three Mansell, who spent his childhood in HallGreen, took place on a Birmingham bus in Broad Street. The city's Lord Mayor Councillor Anita Ward presented the award.
