A pedestrian has died after being struck by a car on a main road in Wolverhampton.

The man, named locally as married father-of-two Gurmukh Singh who was in his late 40s, suffered head injuries and a suspected fractured spine.

He was struck on the Cannock Road, near to the junction with Woden Road, at around 9pm. He was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, which has specialist facilities for head injuries, but later died.

The victim is believed to have lived on Cannock Road, near to the scene, which was sealed off while investigations took place. The tragedy came on a weekend which saw four car crashes in which eight people were injured around the region.

Meanwhile, police have revealed that a 76-year-old Cannock man who was knocked down by a motorcycle in the town has died.

The pensioner, who had head injuries, was also flown to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after the accident on the A4601 Wolverhampton Road near the junction with Wellington Drive at 12.58pm on Friday.

He died later that day in the hospital. Police have not yet named the man.
