Hundreds of people are on waiting lists for allotments in Staffordshire and the Black Country, figures released today have revealed.

Plots across the region are full as people opt to grow their own crops. And those putting their names down for a patch is up as cash-strapped families look to save on their food shop by producing their own fruit and vegetables.

Cannock Chase Council has two waiting lists; one for the Cannock area and the other for the Rugeley area. In total there are 184 people waiting.

It is estimated there are 120 people waiting for plots at 31 sites in Wolverhampton.

In the Dudley area, there are 20 people on the waiting list to rent plots at four allotment sites. Most popular is the Cranmoor Crescent site in Halesowen, which has 13 people on the list.

There are 153 people on the waiting list to rent allotments in the Walsall area. The most popular site is in Dovedale Avenue, Willenhall, with 33 people on standby.
