Glancing up from a mid-air snooze, this was the spectacular sight greeting air passenger Stefanie Gordon as she travelled from New York to West Palm Beach.

Ripping through the clouds, a trail of puffy white trail behind it, the space shuttle Endeavour travels on its final mission before it is retired to a museum.

Stefanie caught the image on her iPhone after being roused by the captain, informing passengers on the Delta flight that they may want to take a look out of their window.

The images and video have been viewed hundreds of thousands of times on Twitter and made a photographic celebrity of sorts of the unemployed 33-year-old from Hoboken, New Jersey.

"Everybody ran over to the east side of the plane," she said, "and all of a sudden there it was in the clouds."

She shot 12 seconds of footage of the shuttle and three still photographs. While she was waiting at the luggage carousel on return she began uploading to Twitter. Shortly afterwards she realised her work was making a splash.

"My phone just started going crazy," she said.
