The Tesco at Burnt Tree Island will shut next weekend to allow work to get started on building a new supermarket at the site, it has been announced.

Once the store shuts at 4pm on Sunday January 9 a temporary and smaller outlet will be opened to cater for the thousands of customers who shop at the Town Gate Retail Park site in Birmingham Road, Dudley.

The petrol station will be closed for the duration of the rebuild which is due to be completed by the autumn.

Tesco corporate affairs manager Tony Fletcher said: "During the demolition and construction phase a temporary store and the pharmacy service will continue to be provided on site but the petrol filling station will also be closed."

The store will be double the size and is likely to be built on two levels.
