Fears for the future of Walsall's meals on wheels

The future of a meals on wheels service in the Black Country was uncertain today as it emerged no-one has been lined up to take over the service when the current contract ends in three months.
Walsall Council chiefs today insisted work was going on behind the scenes to replace Sodexho Healthcare Services Limited, which provides hot meals to hundreds of residents across the borough.
But it emerged today rumours have been circulating that the service would be cut or overhauled.
Councillor Pete Smith, of the Blakenall ward, has demanded answers from council chief executive Paul Sheehan following concerns from elderly residents.
"I have been informed by usually reliable sources that the contract for the meals on wheels service will not be renewed and that the service will cease thereafter," said Councillor Smith.
"A few other people are asking me questions about the very same subject, which, if true, could potentially affect adversely hundreds of vulnerable citizens in our borough."
"It would be good if I and others could categorically state that there is no truth in this whatsoever and that the service, paid for by the council is safe, even after the present contract runs out."
The meals on wheels service in Walsall has previously been under review. Last year a report to the council said it may be more appropriate to give pensioners money to spend on pub lunches.
Council leader Mike Bird said it was a legal requirement for the contract to be put out to tender if the current contract is ending and that a suitable firm would be sought to take over.
"I am not aware of any changes being made to the service," he said.
