Residents in a Staffordshire street were left star-struck when X Factor judge Cheryl Cole turned up at the house of Wolverhampton University student Treyc Cohen - further sparking rumours of a shock return for the axed contestant.

The Geordie singer posed for pictures and autographs with locals outside Treyc's home in Tamworth as speculation mounted that the visit was to offer her a place as a 'wildcard' in the new twist to the show.

Fans say the appearance of the 27-year-old at the semi-detached house is proof that 26-year-old Treyc, a performing arts student at Wolverhampton University, will be returning to the show in Saturday.

A family member staying at her home confirmed today that the singer was no longer there and that she would be watching her pets for a few weeks.

When asked whether Treyc was whisked away to be reintroduced to the competition as a wild card, the family member refused to comment but smiled and said she would be watching the show.

The visit took place on the same day the notorious episode aired that knocked fan favourite Gamu Nhengu out of the competition.

Neighbour Helena Harwood, a 54-year-old factory worker, was on a weekend break in Skegness when Cheryl showed up on her street.

She said: "I was in Skegness when a friend called and told me Cheryl Cole was by my house.

"She rang me on Sunday and said she was spotted at the service station by Tamworth as well. Cheryl took a few pictures and signed autographs before she went into Treyc's house."

Staff at the Tamworth services off the M42 confirmed Cheryl came into the station before carrying on to Treyc's home.

A staff member who refused to provide his name said: "Apparently she came in to use the toilet.

"There was a lot of excitement at work and another worker said she was heading to Treyc's house."

Meanwhile, it was confirmed today that Gamu Nhengu, whose departure from the show caused a storm among viewers, has been told to leave Britain.

The teenager, kicked off the show by Cheryl at the weekend despite being a huge hit with fans, must return to her native Zimbabwe, the UK Border Agency said.
