Safety measures are desperately needed at a busy Black Country where a 16-year-old cyclist died in an accident.

Tyron Allen, 16, was killed when he was in collision with a skip lorry at the junction between Sandbeds Road and Stroud Avenue in Willenhall on Monday.

His death has triggered calls to the Highways department at Walsall Council to carry out checks on the road.

Willenhall councillor Ian Shires said the busy junction was difficult to get out of, and it should be checked over to see if safety measures were necessary to prevent such a tragedy happening again.

He said: "We are going to ask for some safety checks down there because it's quite a horrendous junction.

"There are a lot of bus services running off the estate there and it does create a lot of problems.

"I don't know how the accident happened but we are going to be asking highways to look at the safety aspects on there to see if things can be improved."

Glyn Gordon, 57, of Sandbeds Road, said it wasn't the first time there had been an accident in the vicinity.

The engineer and father-of-two said: "We've had a crane hit our wall and a bus knocked somebody down a few years ago.

"There are not enough restrictions on this as a main road."

Tyron suffered serious injuries in Monday's accident, and paramedics and police tried to save him but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The teenager, from Willenhall, was due to pick up exam results at Coppice Performing Arts School in Wednesfield later this month.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the crash, which happened at around 10.30am, as the skip lorry was travelling towards Bloxwich.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0345 113 5000.
