A group of students, led by the daughter of TV presenter Nick Owen, raised more than £1,000 for Birmingham charity Edward's Trust.

Nick has helped the fundraising effort by hosting events and charity auctions on behalf of the girls, all students at Nottingham University, to help them reach their £1,375 total.

He is one of the patrons of the trust and said he is delighted that his family is getting involved in fundraising for the charity, which works with bereaved families.

Nick, a father-of-four, said: "I'm very proud of Jenny and all her friends for doing such a wonderful fund raising job for a charity which means a lot to me. They organised the events themselves and put a lot of time and effort into this."

Sainsbury's in Selly Oak is attempting to raise £12,000 for the charity and said it will boost the £1,375 raised to take the total to £3,000.

Edward's Trust, based in Calthorpe Road, Edgbaston, was founded by Peter and Hilary Dent in 1989 in memory of their son Edward, who died of cancer when he was seven years old.

Jeremy Walker, the trust's director of business development, said: "These young ladies are fantastic and have been a joy to work with. Their care for families and children is unquestionable.

"They have all worked so very hard for our charity, whilst at the same time organising such a fun event.

"We can't thank them enough."
