A hit-and-run driver left a teenager fighting for her life after the car mounted the pavement and ploughed into a group of youngsters in Wednesbury.

Two other teenagers were also badly injured in the drama. The Vauxhall Astra was later found abandoned less than a quarter of a mile from the scene.

The crash happened at the junction of Holloway Bank and Tame Street as five friends were walking along Holloway Bank at 11.45 last night.

A boy and two girls, all aged 17, were injured as the car ploughed careered onto the pavement.

One of the girls suffered multiple injuries and was critically ill at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital today.

The boy and the second girl suffered leg and arm injuries and were taken to Sandwell Hospital.

Two other teenagers were uninjured.

The driver of the car, a Vauxhall Astra, drove off but the car was found nearby in Woden Road South.

Police investigators were due to be back on scene again today.
