A Walsall police officer has been suspended from his job and will face a crown court trial after being arrested for assault.

Lakhbir Singh Klair, aged 42, a sergeant at Bloxwich Police Station, is accused of assaulting his wife Sukwinder Klair on January 29 in Wednesbury.

Klair spent five days in custody following his first appearance at Warley Magistrates Court last Monday but was released on bail on Friday after a trial date was set for Wolverhampton Crown Court.

Klair appeared before magistrates in Warley again today to apply to vary the conditions of his bail and change the date of the trial, but magistrates refused the request.

Klair, a father-of-three, is currently banned from entering Walsall and visiting the family home in Gillity Avenue, Walsall, as part of the bail conditions.

He denies the charges and will face a trial on March 19 at Wolverhampton Crown Court.
