Regeneration bosses hope the piece of public art in West Bromwich – measuring more than 8ft high – will become the focal point of wedding photographs for years to come. The stainless steel sculpture has been approved by Sandwell Council planning bosses.
It is to be installed in the memorial gardens in High Street, West Bromwich.
The Greets Green Partnership is behind the scheme, saying the flame has "symbolic meaning for all the communities that make up Greets Green".
The work, which will be almost 5ft wide, has been designed by community artist Daniel Cremin and pupils from George Salter's Collegiate Academy. The partnership is spending £8,000 on the flame and the remaining £10,000 is coming from Sandwell Council.
The planning report reads: "The sculpture will be located within the memorial gardens which form part of the Highfields registry office complex. Many weddings take place here and the memorial gardens provide the backdrop to photographic records of these celebratory events.
"It is anticipated the sculpture will be a focus for wedding photographs as views through and around it create interest, as does the shape and material of the sculpture itself."
Land around the sculpture is to be revamped to improve access. The piece was approved in a delegated decision by planning officers at the council.
The partnership is dedicated to the 10-year regeneration of the area.
