The 10-year-old, of Smethwick, has suffered serious kidney problems for the last two years and currently undergoes dialysis.

Father Stuart, aged 39, the branch manager at Barclays' Bearwood branch has undergone rigorous testing to be confirmed as a match for his son. Both father and son, a pupil at Abbey Road Junior School will go into hospital on Tuesday.

The reason for Ben's illness, which developed suddenly in January 2008, has never been identified. Mother Sarah said: "It is hard at the moment. He only gets one night off dialysis, Saturday. For the rest of the week it is 10 hours a night."
