The architectural practice owner had called the eye infirmary at Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital to change the date of his appointment.

But the same letter, giving the same details and new time, was sent out second class 26 times and franked in the hospital's postal room.

The 59-year-old from Lytham Road, Perton,,who has recently begun to suffer from glaucoma, said today: "I needed to change the appointment because it wasn't convenient so I called the hospital.

"The offered me another one and said they would confirm in writing. Yesterday morning I got downstairs and found a pile of brown envelopes.

"They were all exactly the same, telling me when my appointment was going to be at the eye infirmary. They have all been franked, which means that the hospital has paid out for the postage 26 times."

Bosses were today unavailable for comment on the error.
