Buses were stranded inside the bus station for more than an hour after police cordoned off St Michael Street, West Bromwich Ringway just after 9am.

Motorists and pedestrians were forced to take alternative routes after the section of road, from the junction with Moor Street as far as Netto, was closed off.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent an ambulance and rapid response vehicle to the scene and a woman aged in her 40s was taken to Sandwell Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

The stretch of road that was closed off takes in the vehicle entrance to the bus station as well as West Bromwich Central Metro stop. Metro passengers also had to take a lengthy detour through Kings Square and under an underpass to reach the platform.

Police were at the scene this morning directing traffic before the road was reopened at 10.30am. A green Nissan Micra, which is believed to have been involved in the collision was also left parked at the scene. The driver was today assisting police with inquiries.

Babs Coombes, spokeswoman for Centro, who manage the bus station, said: "The road traffic collision has got nothing to do with buses or the bus station, but the police closed the road."

She said extra staff were laid on at the bus station to direct passengers. People were asked to wait at the next stop.
