Supermarket giant Asda has axed its plan to open a megastore in Wednesbury, the Express & Star can reveal.

Asda Living was due to open on Gallagher Retail Park next year – creating 90 jobs.

But the long-awaited plan has fallen through due to problems over the lease.

Chris Marlow, Asda property communications manager, said: "Asda will no longer be opening one of its non-food Living stores on Gallagher Retail Park in Wednesbury.

"Our contract with the park's landlord has expired and we have been unable to agree new terms to lease a unit.

"We will however continue to investigate any opportunities to bring Asda's quality non-food retail offer to the area."

The shop was originally due to open this autumn on the retail park in Axletree Way, near Junction 9 of the M6.

Bosses originally said its opening had been postponed until the new year due to problems with utilities.
