Michael Davies, aged 22, was left for dead in a gutter after he had been for a night out with friends. Doctors say he is in a critical condition after a series of brain operations, and his mother is maintaining a vigil at his bedside.

Today his sister Kerry said the family had been devastated by the accident, which was worse than a nightmare. "He was just left to die, they didn't stop to help him," said 38-year Miss Davies, of Claypit Lane, West Bromwich.

"I find it really difficult to go to the hospital because it's so upsetting, I can't bear seeing him like that – he's not woken up since it happened.

"We were all thinking he is going to get better but the doctors say he might not. They said his brain is damaged," Miss Davies added.

Mr Davies, of Turner Street, West Bromwich, was taken to City Hospital, in Winson Green, Birmingham, before being transferred to the Queen Elizabeth, Edgbaston, and then to Sandwell Hospital.

He is the youngest of 10 siblings and his sister said they wanted to see justice done.

"Because he's the youngest in the family, Michael is always been the one we've really looked after," she said.

"It's heartbreaking what has happened, it's worse than a nightmare. Mum is up at the hospital to see him every single day.

"We are all finding it so hard. I just want the people who have done this to him to be dealt with."

Mr Davies, a former pupil of the George Salter Academy, was discovered by customers from the Desi Masala cafe bar on the corner of High Street and Temple Street, West Bromwich, at 1.26am on October 17.

Officers arrested a 45-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman the following week. Both have now been released on police bail.

During inquiries by accident investigators a Volkswagen Passat car was recovered and is currently being examined.

The force of the collision broke Mr Davies's pelvis and he suffered serious head injuries as he hit the ground.

Mr Davies had been at the New Hop Pole pub, in High Street, West Bromwich, and was making his way home when the incident happened.
