Events in September attracted 1,396, almost double the same period last year. The number of visitors during the second quarter of this year totals 10,794.

This compares with 11,112 during the whole of the 2008/09 financial year.

The increase, plus the introduction of new lines into the bookshop, has also produced an increase in sales, with income already outstripping the total for the last financial year.

Donations have also increased in line with visitor numbers and the celebrations have been hailed a great success.

A report to the city council says: "Regular events generated a large amount of local and national media interest in the Birthplace Museum throughout the year."
