A family were rescued from the wreckage of their people carrier, after it smashed through the garden wall of a Wednesbury home.

It happened in Roberts Road after a dark blue Vauxhall Zafira, carrying two adults and five children came off the road and hit the wall.

Two fire crews from Wednesbury and West Bromwich were called along with an ambulance at 10 last night.

The adults and four of the children were helped out of the wreckage but a fifth child had to be removed in a neck collar after complaining of whiplash-type injuries.

Owners of the house were said to be "unhurt, but shocked." Watch Commander John Wildman of Wednesbury fire station said: "The family were in shock and we helped them from the people carrier..

"The Zafira was the only car involved in the crash and had gone through a quite substantial wall into the garden.

"An ambulance took injured child and her mother for treatment and police were called to the scene to interview the driver.

"As the family lived between 300-400 yards down the road the children were taken home by police."

The ambulance service confirmed that one passenger was treated at hospital.

Rubble and blocks from the wall remained spread across the front garden this morning , with tyre marks in the grass.

The driver of the car, a 39-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of driving with an alcohol level above the limit and charged with failure to provide a sample for analysis.

He was bailed to appear before magistrates at West Bromwich tomorrow.
