Baggies tribute as ex-player's wife dies

The wife of former West Bromwich Albion star Brendon Batson has died after a six-month illness. Cecily Batson, who was in her mid-50s, passed away yesterday.

She had been married to former Baggies full-back Mr Batson for more than 30 years and also leaves two children, Zoe and Jason, and three grandchildren. The couple lived in Birmingham.

A Baggies statement said: "Cecily has been a regular and popular visitor to The Hawthorns and will be sorely missed by everyone at the club. We have passed on our sincere condolences to Brendon and the family and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

Grenada-born Mr Batson, aged 56, played more than 220 times for the Baggies between 1978 and 1982 and returned to The Hawthorns in 2002 for a year as managing director.

Brendon BatsonHe has also been an administrator with the FA and the Professional Footballers Association and is president of the Albion Former Players' Association. Mr Batson was too upset to comment today.

Association secretary Jeff Snape said everyone was extremely saddened at news of Mrs Batson's death.

"I have already had lots of calls from former players passing on their condolences and all our thoughts are with Brendon and his family at this sad time," he said
